Broomfield allotments won thousands in Big Lottery funding earlier this year
An allotment holder will use lottery funding to improve security and create a new home for bees.
Broomfield allotments, in Alders Road, Woodford Green, was awarded £4,632 from the Big Lottery fund in May and work is set to carry out improvements over two weekends this month.
Treasurer Sandra Joseph said break-ins had been an issue at the rear of the site, where there is no fence, and that a wall of “prickly” trees might help deter potential burglars.
“We were very fortunate to win the bid. All we operate on is the rental from our plotholders, so if we want to have anything significant done we need to look elsewhere for funding,” the 61-year-old added.
She said the trees will also be helpful for nesting birds and creepy crawlies, while the group hope to install beehives at a time when bees are threatened.
The work is scheduled to take place on October 19 and October 26.
