'Go Home' vans banned by advertising watchdog
Home office vans displaying adverts telling illegal immigrants to 'go home' have been banned because they were misleading.
The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) said the posters on the vans, which were driven round Redbridge in July, referred to inaccurate arrest statistics.
The advert said there had been 106 arrests in the area in the past week, but the ASA said the reference to the number of arrests was misleading because it did not relate to those detained in the specific areas where people would have seen the vans.
The figure is believed to refer instead to arrests across a large part of north London more than two weeks before the campaign began.
Critics condemned the vans for using language associated with the far right and creating a climate of fear.
