A CARE home in East Oxford may be closed after being branded “old fashioned”.

Disability charity Scope is consulting over the closure of its Jack Howarth House in Hill Top Road, which is home to six disabled people.

Tracie Linehan, Scope’s regional director in the South, said: “We’re looking into closing Jack Howarth House, because we don’t think this kind of old fashioned care home offers disabled people the kind of say that everyone else has over where they live, who they live with and how their money is spent.

“We will now consult with the disabled people who use the care homes, their families, staff and local authorities before making a final decision. This is part of a wider trend, prompted by disabled people, away from institutional, segregated care homes towards the kind of support where disabled people have choice and control over the services they receive and are treated as citizens.”

Six disabled people live in Jack Howarth House, four men and two women, who are aged between 29 and 50.

Martin Crabtree, a spokesman for Oxfordshire County Council which is responsible for adult social care, said: “The county council is aware of the Scope consultation and will be participating when it begins.

“We want to work with disabled people and service providers like Scope to develop services that enable people to be supported in their own homes in a way that maximises choice and control over the services they receive.”
