An Olympic sprinter presented a sports award to a primary school in her home borough today.

Jeanette Kwakye, of Walthamstow, became the first British woman to reach the 100 metres Olympic final in 2008 for more than 20 years, clocking a personal best and finishing in sixth place.

This morning she presented the staff and children at Chingford CofE Primary School in Cambridge Road, Chingford, with a Sainsbury’s school games gold kite mark award.

The government-led school games scheme, launched in 2012, recognises schools that provide opportunities for children to engage in sporting activities, particularly in competitions between schools.

The school’s PE coordinator, Tracy Bruford, said: “Our school has a tradition of success in sport.

“It’s just wonderful to have that time and effort  put in by the children, staff and the parents recognised really.”
