An uprooted tree fell on two homes this morning.

The 30ft tree, which is the tallest in Clacton Road, Walthamstow, was blown onto the front of two properties during this morning's severe weather.

No one was injured and there was no serious structural damage.

Sujana Benchikh, 38 and husband Djamel, were sleeping when they felt the impact of the tree on their house.

Mrs Benchikh said: “I had earplugs in and then all of a sudden there was this massive noise and the whole tree was in front of our bedroom window.

“At first, we thought the tree had fallen through the roof, the noise was that loud. I cannot describe the noise. I have never heard anything like it in my life.”

Dave Back, 47, of Clacton Road, lives next door to one of the houses affected.

He said: “I could hear the winds whistling in the early hours of this morning, but around 6:30am, I heard shouting outside.

“I opened the curtains and I saw braches directly outside my window, it was like having a forest outside my house.

“The general feeling for all of us was disbelief, but people joined together to help move vehicles out of the way. Someone called the council whilst someone else called the fire brigade. It brought the community together.”

The fire brigade attended at 7.08am and condoned off the area, describing the tree as “stable but precarious”.

A wall that separates the front of the two homes has fallen down as a result of the weight of the tree and minor repairs are required to gutters and roof tiles.

As the tree fell, it is understood it snapped a wire on a telephone mast.

Mrs Benchikh says she feels very lucky that she and her husband were not hurt.

“We are very blessed, it could have been a lot worse. When we first heard the noise, we really thought we were in trouble” she said.
