The proposed closure of London Underground ticket offices by 2015 has been labelled as ‘a disaster’ for commuters and visitors to Redbridge.

Up to 750 jobs are set to be lost under Boris Johnson’s plans, which also include a 24-hour service at weekends on selected lines.

Cllr Wes Streeting said the plans, which aim save £270million, were not about improving the service.

He said: "The plan to close tube ticket offices is a disaster for commuters and visitors in Ilford North.

“I use Newbury Park and Gants Hill stations on a regular basis and regularly see significant queues, particularly during rush hour and at weekends.

“This is a not about service improvement, this is a cost-cutting initiative that will see up to 750 people lose their jobs and residents receiving a poorer service.

"Although plans for a 24-hour tube service are welcome, it is disappointing that it will not serve all stations in Ilford North.

“I will be asking the Mayor to extend plans for a 24-hour service to all stations up to and including Woodford."

Cllr Ian Bond welcomed the plan for a 24-hour service, but expressed concern about possible noise levels and disruption in the area.

He said: “The service will be extended at weekends all the way through the Central line and will affect many residents across the area.

“A lot of their gardens back onto central line services so I would be concerned about the impact it will have on them.

“I am sure they will have a lot to say about it when they find out.”
