Tube workers are to be balloted today on whether to strike over proposals to close all ticket offices on the underground.

Transport union the RMT is planning industrial action in the new year over the plans, which would lead to the loss of up to 750 jobs.

The closures were announced by Transport for London (TfL) last week, along with plans for 24-hour services.

For strike action to be approved the RMT would have to hold a two-week ballot and give TfL seven days' notice.

The union has called for "significant action" over the plan.

Phil Hufton, LU chief operating officer, said: "We're clear that there'll be a job for everyone at LU who wants to work for us and be flexible, that we'll make these changes with no compulsory redundancies, and that we'll involve staff in our plans at every stage and support them through change."

The proposals are aimed at saving £40million a year.
