A stage school has claimed first place in a talent competition inspired by the TV show Glee.

Finch Stage School, based at Redbridge Sports and Leisure Centre in Barkingside, were crowned winners ahead of ten groups competing from across London and Essex in the Glee Club Challenge.

The competition was based on the popular US television show, a teen-musical comedy series about a school choir.

Finch Stage School won £2,500 prize money on Sunday, which took place at the O2 arena in front of celebrity judge Graham Norton.

The Finch Stage School Glee Club is made up of 14 girls aged 12 to 18.

The stage school has been running for over 80 years and was founded by late dancer Betty Finch, whose daughter Linda is a successful stage actress.

Miss Finch said: “We entered this year because the timing was good for us but I never thought we would win. I am thrilled and that was the best I have seen them perform.  I wished my Mum was still alive to see them.”

The performance was learnt in just over a week but Miss Finch was determined to enter the competition.

She said: “You never stop working on a number and I am known for ensuring everyone’s eye lashes line up.

“This is such a great bunch of girls and even those who didn’t make the final 14 came to support along with friends and family.

“This is a stand out in my career of 40 years and for the stage school – it’s a great accolade.”

Head judge Graham Norton said: “They were brilliant. The combination of excellence and talent touched us and all the groups made a connection. I love this event, it really moved and inspired and there were lots of worthy winners.”

The prize money was donated by the Jack Petchley Foundation, set up to inspire confidence and success in young people.
