A kennels is taking a pro-active approach to finding homes for its dogs this Christmas by spending hours out meeting the public.

John Rogers, a volunteer at Barley Kennels in Claverhambury, Waltham Abbey, is one of a number of volunteers who has been walking greyhounds around shops in the town to try to raise awareness about homeless animals.

Dogs and kennels volunteers spent 12 hours at Tesco on Friday and Pets at Home on Sunday.

The volunteers and other retired greyhounds will be out looking for new owners around the district and collecting cash for the kennels in the run-up to Christmas.

The kennels, which takes in retired dogs from Harlow greyhound stadium, will hold a Christmas bazaar at the Waltham Abbey Community Centre in Crooked Mile, Waltham Abbey, from 10am until 3pm on Sunday.

Entry is free of charge but volunteers are asking that visitors take some treats for the dogs or dog food.
