Waltham Forest council’s Labour group has confirmed that a councillor who is being investigated for charity fraud has resigned.
It had been understood that Geoff Hammond, who represented the Higham Hill ward in Walthamstow, resigned yesterday.
A Labour spokesman issued a statement to the Guardian this afternoon.
He said: “Geoff Hammond was suspended from the Labour Party pending the outcome of the police investigation and he remains suspended as this investigation is ongoing.
“He has now resigned as a councillor and he will not be seeking re-election for the Labour Party in the local elections in 2014.”
After being arrested on September 17 he was bailed until today.
Police are expected to provide an update shortly.
