Waltham Forest council’s Labour group has confirmed that a councillor who is being investigated for charity fraud has resigned.

It had been understood that Geoff Hammond, who represented the Higham Hill ward in Walthamstow, resigned yesterday.

A Labour spokesman issued a statement to the Guardian this afternoon.

He said: “Geoff Hammond was suspended from the Labour Party pending the outcome of the police investigation and he remains suspended as this investigation is ongoing.

“He has now resigned as a councillor and he will not be seeking re-election for the Labour Party in the local elections in 2014.”

After being arrested on September 17 he was bailed until today.

Police are expected to provide an update shortly.

Councillor Geoff Hammon is merely carrying on a fine Waltham Forest Borough Tradition, and finds himself in some Illustrious Company:

Liberal Democrat Councillor Imran Abrahim convicted of violence against his teenage bride.

Labour Councillor Miranda Grell convicted for making vile homophobic slurs against her arch rival.

Labour Mayor Liaquat Ali fined for thinking he was above the law and able to remove his children from school during term time.

Labour Councillor Afzal Akram’s chicanery in trying to influence planning decisions in favour of his cronies.

Chingford Councillor Graham Sinclair wrongfully claiming benefits

And these are just the acts of Malfeasance we are informed about!
