A cheaper parking initiative has been launched in an attempt to boost trade before Christmas.

As of Tuesday, a 30p charge will provide 30 minutes parking in pay and display areas, rather than the previous 15 minutes

The proposal is part of a new ‘fair parking’ review by Redbridge Council's cabinet member for highways, Shoaib Patel, aimed at making short-term parking more attractive.

The 20 minute pay-and-display tariff in Ilford Town Centre of 80p has now been reduced to 30p.

Cllr Patel said: "I'm pleased to say the cheaper parking initiative is live across Redbridge.

"I promised to get this done by December 2 and we have delivered on that promise.

"Hopefully residents will welcome the news and enjoy the cheaper parking. I also hope local businesses will benefit from this initiative and enjoy the extra footfall and passing trade."

Instructions have been put on the parking metres about the new parking costs.

The trial scheme is expected to run into the new year.

A Highways meeting in February will determine if the scheme will continue.
