A controversial nightclub is advertising on social media that it has a temporary late licence despite its opening hours being restricted.

Funky Mojoes in High Road, Woodford Green, is selling tickets and promoting on Twitter that it has later opening hours in December.

The Essex nightclub put in a temporary event notice to open late on December 20 and 21 two weeks ago. The notice was granted by Redbridge Council's Licesning Committee on Tuesday.

On December 20 and 21, the club will open until 1.30pm, two hours later than its current closing time of 11.30pm.

On Christmas Eve and Boxing Day, the club will stay open until 12.30pm and 3am on New Years Eve.

The nightclub is currently seeking a judicial review after a district judge upheld Redbridge Council's decision to reduce the club's opening times.

Any premises that has permission to sell alcohol can apply for up to 50 temporary event notices a year.

The council can refuse a notice if the police or the environmental health department object to it, and if the council thinks the event could lead to crime and disorder, cause a public nuisance, be a threat to public safety and/or put children at risk of harm.

Opening times at Funky Mojoe were reduced earlier this year after what was described as overwhelming evidence that it had become “a magnet” for serious trouble.

The nightclub was allowed to remain open late on weekends and past midnight on weekdays pending the outcome of the appeal decision.

The High Court decision on the judicial review is expected later this month.

The Guardian has requested a comment from Redbridge Council about the temporary late licence.
