Forest rangers make shock discovery

East London and West Essex Guardian Series: The panther was spotted in a tree The panther was spotted in a tree

Is this definitive proof that a large wildcat is living in Epping Forest?

A panther-like creature was spotted relaxing in a tree near Fairmead Road by stunned forest keeper Phil Murfin on Monday.

There have been numerous sightings of the so-called Beast of Ongar, but no reports of a large wild cat in that part of the forest.

After approaching with extreme caution, the rangers made another shock discovery.

The beast was in fact a stuffed toy, strategically placed by a mischievous fly-tipper.
