A youth centre which was on the verge of closure has been granted new funding.

Priory Court Youth Club, on the Priory Court estate in Walthamstow, has been awarded £9,000 by the William Morris community ward forum after a lack of funds left the club threatened with closure.

A total of 167 signatures were collected on a petition against the possible closure in an appeal by children and club workers.

Circle Housing 33, which runs the youth club, will continue to provide workshops and activities, including healthy eating courses, sports events, sexual health advice and computer gaming sessions.

Gulsun Faik, development manager at the club, said: “Young people need the right environment to develop and flourish. That is why we are extremely pleased that the club has been re-instated.

“The centre is all about encouraging young people to be independent and think for themselves. We encourage them to have a voice, an influence and a place in their communities.”

The club is aimed at young people in the area aged 10 to 16 and runs on Tuesdays from 6pm until 8pm, including school holidays.
