The creation of a new academy school will be delayed by a year.

Walthamstow Primary Academy was due to open on the site of the secondary Walthamstow Academy in Billet Road in September next year.

But Waltham Forest Council has been unable to relocate the DV8 Academy, which is currently based in a building earmarked for demolition to create the new primary school.

The DV8 Academy provides courses for 16 to 19-year-olds in the creative industries.

The Department of Education has committed to opening the new primary on the Billet Road site and United Learning, which will run the academy, has said it does not want to move into a temporary home.

Cabinet member for children and young people, Cllr Clare Coghill, said: "We are pleased that the decision has been taken to postpone the opening in order that Walthamstow Primary Academy and DV8 Academy can move in to permanent, good quality accommodation.

"This will benefit all the children and young people who will receive outstanding education and training from both the academy and DV8."

Darran Lee, Director of Primary Provision at United Learning, said: "Whilst we are anxious that the new school goes ahead as planned, we have a strong relationship with the local authority and, as such, we have asked the DfE to defer the opening for a year until the local authority can make the school’s permanent home available.

"We remain committed to providing an outstanding education to the young people of Waltham Forest and are looking forward to continuing to work with the local authority to make sure the primary academy now opens in September 2015."
