Orient can rent Olympic Stadium - Hearn

East London and West Essex Guardian Series: Barry Hearn said West Ham cannot block Orient renting the Olympic Stadium Barry Hearn said West Ham cannot block Orient renting the Olympic Stadium

Barry Hearn has claimed he has been told West Ham cannot block Leyton Orient renting the Olympic Stadium.

The O’s chairman said he was told the Premier League club have no say over what clubs and businesses can use the venue during a meeting with the London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC).

Mr Hearn has previously claimed the Hammers move to the Stratford stadium, which is close to the O’s Brisbane Road home, could put Orient’s future in doubt and has called for a groundshare.

A recent House of Lords report said Orient should be allowed to use the stadium, with West Ham given priority as anchor tenant.

Hearn told Sky Sports: "West Ham have no say about it - that was the most important thing that came out of the meeting.

"I was not sure if West Ham were guaranteed to be the only football club using the stadium and the breakthrough news for me was that the answer is no, they are just a tenant.

"It is a little light at the end of the tunnel, at least we know there are no legal restrictions to us playing there and the next step is to see what the price would be and then make a decision."

The LLDC has confirmed that anyone can approach the stadium operator, which is due to be appointed next autumn.

Brisbane Road is the home of the O's and should remain. A home match not only brings life to the surrounding area and shops but gives the residents of Leyton great pleasure in supporting their own team. In my humble opinion, the claim by Barry Hearn should be dropped rather than pandering to his ego.
