A childminder has been given a rating of good by Ofsted inspectors, nine months after she was rated inadequate in all categories.

Wendy Julian, of Brook Crescent, Chingford, was praised by inspectors in the report released last week for providing children in her care with a broad range of skills before they reach school age.

A childminder since 2005, Mrs Julian lives with her son and allows the four children in her care to have access to the whole ground floor of her house.

The report said that children in her care are “happy, settled and making good progress” because they are taught well and have a good understanding of their own development.

After an inspection in February, Mrs Julian was rated inadequate in all categories after an inspector said she “failed to meet young children’s emotional and individual needs".

She was also found to be breaching the legal requirements for the Early Years Foundation Stage by caring for five children - more than the requirements allows.

Her self-evaluation was rated as weak and she was described as unable to identify her own strengths and areas for improvement.

Mrs Julian now cares for four children and was described as having a good knowledge of the Early Years Foundation Stage, providing children with a broad range of skills and teaching them about healthy eating and good hygiene.

She was reported to be supporting and following closely the curriculum being taught at nursery and involving the children in chores such as laying the table and tidying the bathroom.

The report said: “The childminder has strived to improve her service effectively since the last inspection.

“She has ensured she has fully addressed previous actions and recommendations.”
