The body of a British surgeon found dead in Syria has been laid to rest in Hainault.

Abbas Khan was buried in The Gardens of Peace Muslim Cemetery in Elmbridge Road, yesterday by his grieving family who insist that he was murdered in Syria.

Dr Khan was found dead in his cell on December 16, the same day that he was due to answer terrorism charges.

The 32-year-old from Streatham was arrested 48 hours after arriving in the country last November while working in a rebel controlled area in a field hospital.

Syrian authorities claim that Mr Khan, from Streatham, committed suicide using his own trousers to hang himself.

However his family claim that he was in good spirits and hoping to come home to his children aged six and seven for Christmas.

An inquest into the death of the 32-year-old was opened and adjourned Walthamstow Coroner's Court on Friday.
