More wind and rain is expected next week and well into the New Year, Wanstead’s weatherman has predicted.

Scott Whitehead, 41, has his own weather station in his garden in Wanstead Park Avenue, Aldersbrook, and has been studying pressure patterns.

He has concluded that pressure will remain low for the next couple of weeks, causing an extended period of wet weather.

Last week he measured 23mm of rainfall on December 23, which caused flood alerts in the Lower River Roding area.

He said: “December rainfall is 140 per cent of the average for this month and we have seen 74mm this month so far, with more expected today and tomorrow.

“53mm is the average for December, but it doesn’t compare to 97mm which we saw last year when we had a really wet Christmas.”

Yesterday was the first completely dry day in 23 days in Wanstead.

However Mr Whitehead believes 2014 is set to be wet for at least the first two weeks.

He said: "Weather reporters sometimes make these predictions and then nothing happens.

"But that's the thing about weather predictions - they get forgotten about quickly."
