A 37-year-old who verbally abused and attacked a man before damaging a police cell after being arrested has been handed a community order.

Ross Matthews, of Mead Close, Loughton, admitted assaulting Lee Arthy and using threatening, insulting or abusive words or behaviour towards him in Harlow on December 13, as well as damaging a police cell on the same day.

Matthews was handed a 12-month community order under by Chelmsford Magistrates on Friday.

Under the order Matthews is required to meet regularly with probation officers and attend an education, training and employment programme for 10 days.

He was also ordered to pay a £60 victim surcharge and £120 compensation to Essex Police.
