A second free school planned in Waltham Forest has delayed opening until next year.

Oasis Community Learning announced yesterday that it had been unable to secure a site for the school to be built in time.

Originally, an intake of Year 7 students had been scheduled to begin in September this year.

But with the consent of the Department of Education, the opening date will be pushed back to September 2015 to allow for building works.

Oasis said a site had been secured for the school, with an announcement due shortly.

The school says all parents and carers who applied for a Year 7 place in 2014 have been contacted and that, because the admission process is separate to the local authority, the changes should not affect the chances of securing a school place elsewhere for September.

Another free school, Walthamstow Primary Academy, was due to open on the site of the secondary Walthamstow Academy in Billet Road in September.

It was forced to delay opening for a year when the council was unable to relocate another planned free school, the DV8 Academy, which is based in a building earmarked for demolition to create the primary school.

The schools, along with Waltham Forest Leadership Academy for Girls, were approved in May last year.
