Two artists are looking for help from residents of a distinctive type of property in Waltham Forest.

Lucy Harrison and Katherine Green are putting together a project covering “Warner” properties – buildings constructed by Thomas Courtenay Warner, one of the largest landowners in Walthamstow in the late 19th century.

Many of the properties can be found around Edward Road and Pretoria Avenue in Walthamstow.

The pair is working in collaboration with a writer and the Walthamstow Historical Society to deliver a survey of the former Warner Estates in Waltham Forest – they say it is the first extensive survey of how these properties are used today.

Warner properties were built in the borough from the late-nineteenth century until the mid-twentieth century, many in the style of distinctive red brick flats.

Residents of the properties are wanted to take part in history interviews and for photographs to be taken of their homes.

Lucy Harrison said: “We would love to hear from local residents who live in Warner properties, whether they are newcomers or long-term residents, whether they live in social housing or private homes.

“We are interested in hearing people’s stories, anecdotes and experiences of living in these homes.”

The project is set to include photography, oral history, an exhibition and publication, walks, talks and events.
