A teacher who has worked in Epping Forest for 32 years has been honoured at an awards ceremony.

Stephen Murray, of Roding Valley High School, received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Essex Teaching Awards.

Mr Murray said: “I am absolutely thrilled by this award and would like to thank the school for nominating me.

“Teaching is a hard, full-on job but each day is different, nearly always enjoyable and each day usually has its own moment of magic.”

Headteacher Paul Banks said Mr Murray has made an ‘amazing’ contribution to children''s education.

Mr Murray was one of four Essex teachers to receive a Lifetime Achievement award.

All the winners will now be entered into the National Teaching Awards.

This is the Oscars of the teaching profession and it is great that he is recognised for doing what he is paid to do unlike some of the under-performing staff who give teachers a bad apple.

This is a very well deserved award, Mr Murray has not only been a good teacher to many of the people to the local area he has been a great community member, he has always been grounded and very fair in his workings and opinions. Still to this day the majority of students he has taught continue to call him either Mr Murray or "Sir" (and they ally continue to do so because they did and still respect him) He has always gone that extra mile and taken the time to find out how his former pupils are doing in their lives, I can say this as I was a pupil in a local school when Mr Murray started his teacher training some 35 years ago, he then went on to teach my nieces and nephews who are now parents themselves, and to this day takes time out to their well being, I just hope that he will still be around for my great nieces and nephews. Well done Mr Murray we are very proud of you and let's hope there are many more awards to come.
