Flooding forced rescue crews to use an inflatable boat to reach residents last night.
Police officers went door to door in Lower Hall Lane in Chingford last night at about 3am to reassure residents while firefighters put down sandbags around an electrical station as a precaution.
Water from the river reached a depth of 60cm at its height but the level has now dropped, according to the fire brigade.
No properties were directly affected.
