A traditional pub is having a makeover in a bid to make it more family friendly.

The Duke, formerly The Duke of Edinburgh, in Nightingale Lane, Wanstead, is aiming for a “homely vibe” inside, while introducing booths and a grill in a refurbished garden.

A monthly kids club, Little Dukes, has already begun showing children’s films and will run on the first Monday of every month.

The pub is also planning to run craft afternoons, a "secret" darts club and its own coffee house.

New landlord Ronnie Finch, said: “Rather than strip the pub back to its bare bones we’re trying to upcycle, reclaim and reuse what we can.

“The idea is to hang onto the cosy, homely vibe so many people seem to love.

“Think vintage with a dash of luxury. The overall effect will be laid-back and lived-in, and we hope it will get better with age.

“We want to transform The Duke from humble beginnings into the first of its kind in the area – a hub for the range of different people with different needs that make up this rapidly growing neighbourhood."

The pub is also planning to launch a new menu which will feature a traditional Sunday roast.

The changes are scheduled to be completed by April.
