School pupils debated a range of topics including time travel, “selfies” and dreams at a public speaking competition.
Schools competed in the regional round of Youth Speaks, organised by Barkingside Rotary Club.
Other topics included posthumous pardons and 500-calorie diets.
Woodford County High School in Woodford Green won the award for best team in the senior category, while Oaks Park High School in Ilford won best team at intermediate level.
Both teams will go onto the national finals on March 15.
Rotary club member Margaret Cooper said: “The voice of our youth is the voice of the future.
“The competition's aim is to offer young people in our community an experience of public speaking and fostering leadership.”
