A victim of bullying who cares for her disabled mother and dedicates her time to helping fellow students is one of two sixth-formers who have been nominated for an award.

Rhianna Kalloo, who suffers regular pain due to a spinal condition, has overcome hardship to support fellow students at Heathcote School in Normanton Park, Chingford, and volunteer at children’s charity Childline.

The 19-year-old, of Friday Hill West, has been nominated by the school’s head of sixth form, Aiden McCarney, for a John Lewis Young People of the Year award, which recognise role models.

As well as completing an internship at Childline, Miss Kalloo helped out on the charity’s website and raised money by giving speeches about her experiences.

She said: "I love the work I do for Childline. I love being able to give something back to people who help youngsters all over the country."

Fellow Heathcote student, Georgia Groom, 18, of Walmer Close, has also been nominated for the award.

She runs a homework club for year 7 pupils, assists staff with a catering club and coaches drama pupils.

Miss Groom said: "When I finish sixth form I want to go to university and become a drama teacher, so when the opportunity came to volunteer at the school I took it.

"Encouraging the youngsters opens your eyes to how teachers do their jobs."
Mr McCarney paid tribute to both teenagers.

He said: "Rhianna is a very caring person and does things quietly in the background without seeking recognition.

"Georgia knuckled down academically but also applied herself to helping the school community. She has blossomed since her early days at school and turned into a fantastic role model for other pupils."

The winners will be announced at a ceremony in Blackfriars on March 29.
