A man born just months before the outbreak of the First World War has celebrated his 100th birthday with loved ones.

Antonio Felice, born in Italy, was the centre of attention yesterday as family, care home staff and Waltham Forest's Mayor Nadeem Ali all gathered to celebrate.

Mr Felice moved to England in 1952 and worked as a labourer.

He worked for the London Brick Company before moving to Leytonstone in 1958.

During his time in Leytonstone and right up until his retirement at the age of 75, Mr Felice worked at a dispatch unit for Percy Ingle.

As his health deteriorated, his family moved him into The Manor care home in Hainault Road, Leytonstone in 2008.

Speaking on his birthday yesterday, daughter Jo Felice said:

"My dad is my life and I am so proud that he has reached the age of 100. I would like to thank The Manor for all that they do for a man that is loved and admired by all friends and family."

Despite his old age, care home manager Nicola Wilson said the father-of-three was on top form.

"His health has improved slightly recently and he was great fun at the party. He enjoyed a drink or two and was in high spirits throughout the day."
