Environmentalists have been awarded an Olympic Legacy Grant for a bee project.

Wanstead & Woodford Friends of the Earth have named the project Seeds for Snaresbrook.

Diana Korchien, coordinator of Wanstead & Woodford Friends of the Earth, said: “This will create a healthy environment for bees and other pollinators. It will also obviate the need for spraying pesticides or herbicides in the tree pits, thereby reducing local pollution at a stroke, and making our streets lovely to walk through.”

The project will be promoted with a free public screening of More Than Honey, a film based on what could happen if bees became extinct, at Wanstead Library, Spratt Lane on April 25 at 7pm.

A Q&A will take place after the film, with Redbridge's Nature Conservation Officer Francis Castro and representatives of Essex Beekeepers and The Bumblebee Trust.
