Residents, business owners and motorists are calling for action to increase safety measures at a footbridge where a 29-year-old woman jumped to her death.

Last night police managed to stop a man jumping from the same bridge over the A406 north circular where Elif Orman died on February 17.

Police were called to the bridge between the A112 Crooked Billet roundabout and the Cooks Ferry interchange just before 9pm to reports of a person in distress on the bridge.

London Ambulance Service sent a crew, duty officer and a hazardous area response team.

The incident was stood down after police managed to get the man off the bridge and to safety.

On both occasions, Shane Sheehy, owner of Fairways Driving Range in Southend Road, Chingford, watched the victims on the bridge.

And now, the 49 year-old, of Rushcroft Road in Chingford, is demanding the railings on the bridge be raised.

"Ever since that tragic incident a couple of weeks ago, something definitely needs to be done.

"The railings need to be raised as the way it stands, anyone can climb over.

"Chingford is not the same affluent area it was when I moved here six years ago - people are struggling."

Tomica Jacobs, 32, of Greenham Crescent in Chingford, lives less than 100 yards from the bridge and was one of hundreds of motorists caught up in the traffic.

She said: "The railings along the bridge should be blocked either side to try and prevent these incidents from occurring."

Transport for London are responsible for managing the bridge.

A spokesman said: "We constantly monitor all our structures to ensure there are maintained to the latest safety standards and we will be working with the police to understand these recent incidents."
