Campaigners have spoken out against what they say are unfair banana prices.

Members of the Waltham Forest Fairtrade Campaign Group (WFFTCG), dressed in banana and gorilla suits, handed out Fairtrade bananas and raised awareness about what they say is the impact of supermarket price wars over bananas.

They claim only one in three bananas sold in the UK are fair trade and are pushing for all bananas to be sold under the fair trade premium - a sustainable price which must never be lower than market price.

Rebecca Haslam, WFFTCG secretary, said: “Farmers and workers who grow bananas in countries like Colombia are being trapped in poverty.

“We are asking people to sign a petition asking Vince Cable to urgently step in and investigate the impact of retailer pricing practices.”

As part of the Make Bananas Fair campaign the group will be in Walthamstow Town Square on Saturday from 11am until 1pm.
