Nightclub must stop selling alcohol and providing music entertainment by 11:30pm tonight

East London and West Essex Guardian Series: Council warns Mojoe's to abide by licensing laws Council warns Mojoe's to abide by licensing laws

A nightclub is being warned it must comply with all the terms and conditions of its licence ahead of tonight's opening.

Redbridge Council has issued a statement saying Funky Mojoe must stop selling alcohol and regulated entertainment at 11:30pm tonight.

The nightclub in High Road, South Woodford, has adopted a new policy of 'bring your own booze' to avoid closing early following its High Court defeat last month.

Last month, Funky Mojoe lost a landmark High Court challenge to overturn a decision by Redbrige Council to cut its opening hours due to crime and anti-social behaviour.

However, the venue has said it will now bypass the restriction by allowing customers to bring their own alcohol to the venue after 11.30pm.

By midnight however, the club is not allowed to have dj's, play CDs, computer files or any other recorded music media but is allowed to play music from a live radio broadcast.

The council statement reads: "Licensing laws are complex and the council is consulting with its lawyers to determine if any of the current operating proposals by Funky Mojoe’s management breach the Licensing Act 2003.

"Working in partnership with the local police, we will be monitoring the premises very closely on Saturday and have already made it very clear to the licence holder and their lawyers that we will be taking enforcement action if we consider it appropriate to do so.

"We will continue to do everything we can to make sure that they are complying with the law."

Any activity that breaks with the terms of a licence or temporary event notice can result in a fine of to £20,000 and a six month prison term.

Following last month's High Court ruling, the club was denied a judicial review, ordered to pay the council’s legal costs of £127,000 and denied the right to appeal.

The venue will continue to open until 3am under the new alcohol proposal on Fridays and Saturdays from this weekend.

They will not listen, you will need van loads of police out there to quell the trouble when they get ejected, the retirement home next door will bear the brunt of the noisy disturbance that will ensue. These owners will only take notice with effective punishment, gaol would be a great start.

Sounds like they had a blast, avoiding licensing laws by the BYO approach and then playing only Live radio broadcasts rather than a DJ.

Can't see that being attractive longer term

So what idiots take their own booze and listen to a radio. Cheaper to stay in, probably more fun.
