Hundreds of people across the borough celebrated International Women's Day today as they marched through the streets of Walthamstow.

About 1,000 women and girls took part in the events, which started with a re-enactment of a 1910 Suffragette march from Cedars Avenue to the town hall.

The Wonderful Women's Walk, organised by Walthamstow MP Stella Creasy, and escorted by police, saw traffic come to a standstill as hundreds walked in solidarity waving banners, shouting slogans and wearing colourful home-made sashes.

16 year-old steward Arifa Nasim of Forest School in Walthamstow said today's events were "extraordinary".

"None of this would have happened without Stella's passion and drive," she added.

"It has been an extraordinary day, and has been supported across all generations.

"We even had little girls calling on the drivers to beep their horns in support, which is just brilliant."

Feminist Rebecca Mason brought along her nine month old daughter Beatrice.

The 33 year-old of Haroldstone Road, Walthamstow said: "The march was well organised and everyone was good natured. It was nice to see us women following in the footsteps of such pioneering female activists."

Following the march, hundreds of women gathered in the assembly hall as Ms Creasy officially opened the Waltham Forest Women's Network (WFWN) event.

A food festival, dancing and workshops will continue throughout the day before tonigh't grande finale fashion show at 6:15pm.

And of course transgender male to female is included. They were giving flowers to all the women in the restaurant I was in last night in Walthamstow and it was sad at the number of women who had no idea of the special day.
