I read with interest London Lib Dem MEP Sarah Ludford's letter (Guardian, February 20).

She is of course right to point out the benefits of the EU. It is good for trade, and the EU supports many social projects in this country. Almost all our environmental law comes from the EU, and Greens such as London MEP Jean Lambert and South East MEP Keith Taylor often have a hand in its formulation.

Ms Ludford, however, is disingenuous when she says only Lib Dems are prepared to take on UKIP and want to keep the UK in Europe. We Greens believe Britain's future is in the EU, but with much reform, and with some powers handed back to nation states. We have benefitted in so many ways from EU investment over the years but there is much work that needs to be done.

Here in the Eastern region we came very close to having an MEP last time, the Green group in the European Parliament is bigger than the bloc UKIP belongs to, and we are far more active.

Voters don't have to settle for the tainted and unpopular Lib Dems if they want to stay in Europe.
