No compensation will be given to market traders set to lose a day’s earnings when the Tour de France visits Epping, the county council has confirmed.
The Monday market in High Street will not go ahead on July 7 when 6,000 people are expected to line the streets to watch the sprint section of stage 3 of the race.
The district council is set to write to County Hall to present the stallholders’ case for compensation, but this has already been rejected.
Speaking at a meeting yesterday, county council cabinet member for sport, Ann Naylor, ruled out any payments for loss of trade.
She said:” There will be no compensation whatsoever.
“There is no fund and it is not feasible for the organisers to pay compensation to all those affected by the race.”
Epping Market traders are currently seeking advice from the National Market Traders Association.
The district council has ruled out moving the market on the day, saying it is impractical.
