Woodford Liberal Synagogue celebrated on Saturday
A synagogue marked the festival of Purim by dressing up and acting out an Eastenders-themed play.
The Woodford Liberal Synagogue, in Marlborough Road, South Woodford. celebrated on Saturday.
The festival is based on the biblical story of Esther, who hides her true identity, so it is traditional to wear fancy dress.
Another tradition is to retell the Esther story in the form of a play, and this year it was set within the ficticious Eastenders pub, acted out in a pantomime style by teaching staff.
Synagogue chairman Bob Kamall said: “Purim is one of the happiest of festivals, the wearing of fancy dress and the spiel itself both bring a sense of fun. It also brings together families across the generations as young and old get to together to share the fun.”
