A man who admitted stealing jewellery worth £8,000 from a family member avoided prison yesterday.

Mahmoud Mahmoud, 23, of Bushwood Road in Leytonstone, stole four bangles from Amira Omar, who lived at the same address as Mahmoud, between November 1 and January 14.

At a Thames Magistrates’ Court sentencing hearing he was given a six week sentence, suspended for 12 months.

It was revealed in court that Amira Omar is a family member.

Not all of the items, which the court heard had high sentimental value, have been recovered.

The prosecution did not request compensation.

Mahmoud must also carry out 100 hours of unpaid work over the next year and pay costs of £165.
