A former Chinese DJ who bought a pub after selling burgers in its car park has won an award for the quality of ciders he sells.

Rob Chapman swaped the grill for the pumps at The Woodbine, in Honey Lane, Waltham Abbey, in 2011.

The pub has now been chosen as the best cider pub in the area by the Campaign For Real Ale (CAMRA).

He said: “We have a great selection of ciders here. This year we’re hoping to stock all the ciders brewed in Essex.”

Mr Chapman bought the burger van after returning from China, where he was working as a DJ.

The van was later placed in the top 20 best cafes in Essex by website Trip Advisor, but Mr Chapman now dedicates his time to The Woodbine.

But he has continued to indulge his love of food, with an emphasis on quality produce.

Mr Chapman said: “I enjoy providing good quality food and I know where all the food comes from and we don’t buy any packet meals.

“I’m trying to get back to a traditional pub with traditional recipes and good quality food and drink.”

He will be presented with the award on April 6 when he will also be launching new ciders from London Glider Cider based in Kings Avenue, Woodford Green.
