Women and elderly drivers 'did not know speed limit' - police

East London and West Essex Guardian Series: Wanstead Neighbourhood Policing Team caught 43 cars over the limit in a speed gun operation Wanstead Neighbourhood Policing Team caught 43 cars over the limit in a speed gun operation

Police have said the majority of drivers caught speeding in a 20mph zone during an operation were women and the elderly who did not have “any idea” of the speed limit.

Officers using a speed gun in Elmcroft Avenue, Wanstead, at the junction of Colvin Gardens, stopped 43 drivers in just one hour on Thursday.

A police spokeswoman said: “All were local residents and predominately female and elderly who thought it was a 30mph limit. None had any idea that the area was in fact a 20mph zone.”

She added that, despite being caught driving and varying speeds, they all received a warning.

That's it, nick the elderly drivers and woman during the day for driving at 23 mph , police go home when it is dark and the drivers are doing 60 and overtaking on the wrong side of the road by the Eagle Pub, the drug dealers are out in full swing and the drunken idiotic yobs are smashing the bus stop shelter glass, kicking over dustbins and causing havoc in the streets.

Not as amusing as the 12 police officers they used to do insurance/MOT/tax checks down The Drive, stopping a single car at a time. The reason they gave for having so many officers there was "it's quicker with multiple officers doing each separate job".

Total, total waste of manpower.
