At least 58 schools out of 89 in Redbridge are affected by the teachers’ strike today.

But Redbridge Council says it does not know how the walk-out has affected the remaining schools.

Information published by the authority shows at least 22 schools are fully closed and 36 are partially closed.

The walkout is part of an on-going dispute over pay, pensions and working conditions.

The council said it cannot report on the status of school which has not contacted the authority.

Clore Tikva primary school, in Fulwell Avenue, Barkingside, has 420 pupils.

It is remaining open and using other staff to cover lessons in the absence of five striking teachers.
Headteacher Lenna Rosenburg said: "It won’t affect the children because the quality of the teaching will be as good as it usually is.

"The strike is something teachers feel they need to do and I respect that."

Members of Redbridge NUT joined a rally in central London.

Christine Blower, general secretary of the NUT, said last week: "Teachers deeply regret the disruption caused by this strike action to parents and pupils. The government’s refusal, however, to engage to resolve the dispute means that we have no alternative other than to demonstrate the seriousness of our concerns."

The Department for Education said in a statement: "Despite constructive engagement with their concerns, the NUT is taking action that will disrupt parents' lives, hold back children's education and damage the reputation of the profession."
