A large lorry became stuck in Winchester Road, Highams Park, this morning

East London and West Essex Guardian Series: The lorry and digger blocking Winchester Road. The lorry and digger blocking Winchester Road.

A large lorry caused traffic chaos this morning when it became stuck in a Highams Park road.

The truck, which was carrying a huge digger, was stuck for around an hour in Winchester Road during this morning’s rush hour.

Nearby roads became gridlocked as it blocked cars and buses from passing, one resident said.

Winchester Road resident Karen Murray claims the narrow and already congested road is a designated route for oversized vehicles and often experiences such delays.

“I was woken by the noise of the lorry moving down the road and said to my husband ‘They must’ve closed the road off to allow that down here’ but they hadn’t,” the 42-year-old said.

“The lorry got stuck half way down the road and chaos prevailed for the next hour.”

The walk leader who works for Epping Forest District Council is currently gathering signatures for a petition asking for traffic calming measures to be installed in the street.

Traffic calming measures! was this oversize vehicles speeding? I don`t think so. Waltham Forest Council is allowing huge housing developements to go up in all available space, in my opinion to get their grubby hands on the council tax, rents & other monies, these vehlcles will soon be coming to a space near you.

Lorries and large vehicles (except for busses) need to be stopped from using this road. Passways similar to those which would be found on country roads might also be an option.

Alternatively people could stop driving everywhere, the pollution in Highams Park today was even more disgusting that usual.

Traffic is much clearer when school holidays are on - schools should encourage parents to walk their children to school - the average distance school-children live from Handsworth School is 0.3 miles. That's walkable and you'd probably do it faster walking than driving!

Surely this lorry is well over the width requiring a police escort?

MDJ, there is no way that the council allowed that truck up Winchester at any time let alone during rush hour without a temporary street closure in place. I work in construction and live off that road. I couldn't believe my eyes. Either they got lost or were incompetent.

That was my point! Somebody pulling a fast one .... or rather, not, as it turned out.
In this day and age it's always worth asking what the SatNav was telling them, as well
