A children’s home in Redbridge is to be investigated over claims that Jimmy Savile may have abused residents.

Today, Michael Gove, Secretary of State for Education, said his department had received new information about the television star relating to several children’s homes and schools in England dating back to the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.

One of the 21 homes on the list is a Barnardo's site in Redbridge although the exact site has not yet been identified.

The head office for Barnardo's is currently in Tanners Lane, Barkingside.

The police believe Saville abused around 200 children across the country.

The information was uncovered as part of a review process undertaken by the Metropolitan Police Service on behalf of the Department of Health.

Mr Gove said that his department has decided to pass the information on to the appropriate organisations for further investigation.

In the statement, he said: "I have asked Lucy Scott-Moncrieff to ensure that investigating organisations take all practicable steps to establish what happened and why at the time of the incidents and any lessons there might be to inform current safeguarding practice in our schools and children’s homes."

In a statement released on Twitter, Barnardo's said: “Barnardo’s takes extremely seriously any allegation of historical abuse from adults who were once children in our care.

“We will be working closely with the Department for Education to look into the allegations of which they have recently made us aware.”
