Hundreds of thousands of people living in high-rise flats and maisonettes in London are at risk for not having a fire escape plan, a report has found.

A survey conducted by London Fire Brigade (LFB) has found 760,000 Londoners do not know what to do in the event of a fire, with 50 per cent of residents saying they would leave their home - a move considered dangerous by the brigade.

In response to the findings, LFB has launched a new website, knowtheplan.co.uk, to give tenants and and landlords practical information.

London Fire Commissioner Ron Dobson said: "Flats and maisonettes are built to give you some protection from fire - a minimum of 30 minutes and up to 60.

"Walls, floors and doors will hold back flames and smoke for a time."

He added that all residents should be aware of the plan and stay in the flat "unless heat or smoke is affecting you." The YouGov commissioned survey questioned 2,899 adult Londoners.
