Witches, fairy queens and mad kings took over a school last week as pupils learnt about Shakespeare.

From blancmange banquets to stage productions, the work of one of Britain’s most famous playwrights was brought to life in Buckhurst Hill.

Nursery pupils at Daiglen School right the way through to year six students were educated on all things Shakespeare.

Teacher Holly Lamont said that the school has a special week-long event every year.

She said: “We have had theatre, music and dancing to entertain the feasters and a jester to entertain the King.

“It’s been a whole week of Shakespeare. We have had Shakespeare themed lessons, even in maths.

Years five and six are currently learning about school provision in third world countries.

Many attended an event at the O2 in London with Richard Branson and other famous faces to learn about the national ‘Send My Friend to School’ campaign.

They presented their ideas to Eleanor Laing MP on how teachers and world leaders should be.

Most told the Deputy Speaker that the best kind of teacher was kind and strict and some requested that staff had a brain “the size of a blue whale” to impart wisdom on the children.

Pupils from the school have organised their own bake sales and charity events for the campaign.

Rachel Thomas a teacher at the school said that the children have been inspired by the project.

She said: “The things that they have heard have really resonated with them and they have been coming up with ideas to raise money for charity.”
