Pupils at Chipping Ongar Primary School had a visit to RHS Hyde Hall in Chelmsford on Friday after winning a competition to design an allotment.

The pupils won the Packed Lunch Plot Competition, held by Edible Essex, by planning what they could grow in a small plot and inventing recipes for a healthy packed lunch using the produce.

The school’s winning entry was entitled “Crazy Daisy Vegetables”, and impressed judges with recipes such as “Crazy Carrot Salad” and “Snazzy Wazzy Beetroot Cake”.

They won £1000 worth of equipment and the opportunity to plant the winning plot design at RHS Hyde Hall.

Head Teacher Bridget Hill said: “The children absolutely loved their trip to Hyde Hall; it was a great day out. They brought back plants they had planted on the day and could see their designs actually planned out, which was brilliant for them.”
