Works to replace a structurally weak road bridge will start today.

The bridge in Palmerston Road, Walthamstow, will close today until April 25 as Network Rail carry out the first phase of works to erect a temporary bridge.

The temporary bridge will be accessible to pedestrians, cyclists and emergency services only.

The existing bridge section in Palmerston Road will be closed to all vehicles between Mission Grove and Somers Road during this period, but access will still be possible in all other sections of the street.

Pedestrians will be able to still use the bridge over the Gospel Oak to Barking railway line during the three-week period.

Waltham Forest Council has said they were only informed about the planned closures yesterday but residents near to the bridge have been kept informed by Network Rail.

The bridge will be closed again at some point in May to allow the diversion of up to 16 utility services.

Major works to replace the structure with a new bridge will take place between August and September of this year.

Network Rail has been contacted for further details about the timeline of works.

They have set up a 24 hour helpline on 08457 11 41 41 to deal with any concerns or questions relating to the works.
