A primary school is aiming to be the first in Waltham Forest to achieve a United Nations award for respecting and teaching children’s rights.
The Jenny Hammond Primary School in Worsley Road, Leytonstone, was, in 2011, the first primary school in the borough to receive the UNICEF Rights Respecting Schools Award (RSSA) and now it is aiming for Level 2 recognition.
Yesterday as part of the bid pupils displayed photographs they had taken which they felt encapsulated one of the articles from the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC).
The school will be assessed at the end of the month.
Deputy headteacher John Yates-Harold said: “Every child is a valued member of our school community and the UNICEF Rights of the Child supports our commitment to empowerment.”
The RSSA recognises schools which make the CRC integral to planning, policies and practice by teaching children about their rights and demonstrating them in relationships between children, teachers and adults.
