John Cryer MP made a splash for charity today hosting a fundraising swimming gala for the Alzheimer’s Society at the London Aquatic Centre in the Olympic Park.

The Leyton and Wanstead MP, whose relay team also featured Leeds West Labour MP Rachel Reeves and Bristol North West Conservative MP Charlotte Leslie, took on teams from Waltham Forest council, the London Legacy Development Corporation, Leyton Sixth Form College and the Alzheimer’s Society.

Mr Cryer’s team claimed the victory on the day, ahead of what he said was a competitive field.

The podium was rounded out by swimmers from the Alzheimer’s Society taking second place with the London Legacy Sharks in third.

Leyton Sixth Form’s team came fourth and Waltham Forest Council’s team, made up of councillors Gerry Lyons, Ahsan Khan, Khevyn Limbajee, finished in sixth place.

“I thank all the participants for taking time out to support this event,” Mr Cryer said.

“Sadly many of us will develop dementia as we get older. Most of us know someone with Alzheimer’s or dementia, be they a neighbour, friend or relative.

“I was a bit embarrassed that my assembled team won but the race was very competitive and exhausting.”

A junior race between swimmers from Newport School in Newport Road, Leyton, Norlington School for Boys in Norlington Road, Leyton, and Mayville Primary School in Lincoln Street, Leytonstone, was won by Newport School.

Mr Cryer is aiming to raise £2,000 for research into dementia.
