An elderly man was taken to hospital after being rescued from a house fire.

Four fire engines and 25 firefighters were called to the house in Mornington Road, Chingford, just after 7:30pm yesterday.

An elderly woman managed to escape the blaze, which badly damaged the ground floor, before firefighters arrived.

Firefighters wearing protective breathing apparatus rescued an elderly man suffering from smoke inhalation from the first floor of the flat.

He was taken by ambulance to Whipps Cross University Hospital.

The blaze was under control by 8:20pm and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
