Measures to tackle the problem of the harassment of schoolgirls on the street and mental health among the young have been approved for funding by Redbridge Council’s cabinet.
The Redbridge Youth Council, which includes 13 to 19-year-olds, proposed how £100,000 of funding should be allocated after consulting young people across the borough.
On Tuesday, in the first move of its kind by the council, the cabinet agreed to fund a range of measures, including workshops on safety by experts, more information about mental health issues, careers conferences and a dedicated online presence.
Details emerged of girls being regularly harassed on the streets of the borough during a town hall debate in October last year, prompting calls for the police to act.
Councillor Alan Weinberg, cabinet member for children’s services, said: “I’ve been impressed with the professional and thoughtful way the Youth Council has approached this task.
“Not only have we listened to the concerns they have raised with us during Local Democracy Week last year, we’ve put our money where our mouth is and given them the opportunity to set a £100,000 budget to tackle those issues.”
